Police have arrested four people over the demolition of an NGO-run health centre in Dhaka’s Mirpur-1.
The four were arrested in a series of raids on Friday night, Shah Ali Police Station chief Jahangir Hossain said.
Investigators say the suspects have admitted to taking part in the attack for money.
“We analysed several CCTV recordings, but the attackers’ faces were not clear,” said Jahangir.
“During the investigation, we found evidence of their involvement and arrested four people.”
Jahangir could not immediately provide the names or identities of those arrested.
He said the four had initially admitted to police that they took part in the attack in exchange for money. They have been sent to court.
The arrests came after the Radda MCH office and health centre was demolished late on Thursday night.
Heavy machinery was used to tear down the entire facility, including one permanent and three semi-permanent buildings.
Those behind the demolition then put up a signboard for “Somomona Dokandar Samity Ltd” (Like-minded Shopkeepers’ Association Ltd) in front of the property before leaving.
Radda alleges that office equipment and a large quantity of vaccination supplies were also looted during the attack.
Radda Executive Director Nasrin Akhter has filed a case with Shah Ali Police Station over the incident.
The case names local BNP leader Hanif Mia and another 200 to 250 unidentified people as suspects.
Radda says its MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur-1 has provided free primary healthcare, maternity and family planning services to poor and disadvantaged mothers and children for 50 years in partnership with the government.
