NCP demands prompt justice for martyred students, citizens in July uprising

Party leader Sarjis Alam asks everyone to prioritise putting Hasina on trial before thinking about an election

National Citizen Party Convenor Nahid Islam has called for swift adjudication of the “mass murder and oppression of students and citizens" by the Sheikh Hasina regime during the July uprising.

On Tuesday, leaders and activists of the NCP visited the graves of those martyred in the mass uprising in Dhaka’s Rayer Bazar.

They also paid tribute at Savar’s National Martyrs' Monument earlier in the morning as part of the first programme since the NCP was launched.

“The suffering of those who sacrificed themselves and were injured can be alleviated to an extent through justice. This justice should serve as an example, so that fascism does not emerge again,” Nahid said.

Nahid was at the forefront of the 36-day movement that ousted the Awami League regime and forced former prime minister Sheikh Hasina to flee to India.

He was one of the coordinators of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement at the time and then became an advisor to the interim government. On Mar 25, he resigned from his post to join the NCP.

Sarjis Alam, chief organiser (north) of the NCP, said: “Until the day we see the killer Hasina in the gallows, no one should speak of an election -- even by mistake.”

He also said that the home advisor and law advisor would have to shoulder the blame in case Hasina was not put on trial.

“It is not known where the killer Hasina dumped the bodies. Mothers are frantically looking for the bodies of their children. How can our Bangladesh think about anything else before this murderer is brought to justice?”
