Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam has asked for the cooperation of city residents to achieve his goal of removing waste from Eid sacrifices in six hours.
"We have made all the preparations,” he said on Monday. “I urge citizens, please cooperate with our cleaning staff. Call the hotline number 16106 and inform us about any waste. Action will be taken from the control room.”
Mayor Atiq and DNCC councillors offered Eid prayers at Mirpur’s Golartek ground in the morning. This is the first time that the Eid jamaat has been organised in this field by the DNCC.
After the service, Atiq addressed reporters and sent his Eid wishes to the people of the city and the country.
The mayor said, "For the first time, the main congregation has been organised under the initiative of DNCC. Muslims were able to offer their prayers with ease. The Golartek ground is a historic ground, but it was misused. I learnt that drug addicts were using drugs here. We will not allow it to continue."
The mayor said that the field would be developed and arrangements would be made for sports. He said, "I will install lights so that, even at night, the youth can play here. If the Eid congregation is organised in this field, the local people will protect its sanctity."
The mayor said that every year from now on, the DNCC would organise the Eid congregation on the ground.
Mufti Emdadullah, khatib of Mirpur Baitul Jannat Jaame Masjid led the Eid congregation. Dhaka-14 MP Md Mainul Hossain Khan and other dignitaries attended the service.
Atiq urged residents not to leave sacrificial animal waste everywhere.
“We have provided polythene bags, bleaching powder, and Savlon to the city residents through the councillors. More than 10,000 sanitation workers are engaged in waste removal. DNCC councillors, officials and I are in the field. Put the sacrificial waste in a polythene bag and keep it in the designated place. Our staff will collect it."
The two city corporations of Dhaka have taken on the challenge of removing at least 39,000 tonnes of waste generated by animal sacrifices and cattle markets in Dhaka. This waste removal will start at 2pm.
The DNCC is expecting some 125,000 animals may be sacrificed in the city based on its experiences from last year’s Eid-ul-Azha.
This corporation, which is in charge of managing the north of Dhaka, removed 19,644 tonnes of waste over the three days of Eid last year. Officials believe that a little more waste may be generated this time.
