The interim government is considering “July 36 University” as the name for the new university dedicated to seven government colleges that were previously affiliated with Dhaka University.
A committee led by the University Grants Commission, or UGC, Chairman Prof SMA Faiz has proposed the name.
Prof Faiz told bdnews24.com the final decision would be made after discussions with students.
He said: "We have considered a few names, and students have also suggested some. Among them, we liked the July 36 University.
“The name was also praised by the education advisor when we presented it to him. However, the final decision will be up to the students.”
The seven government colleges are Dhaka College, Government Bangla College, Government Titumir College, Eden Mohila College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, and Begum Badrunnesa Government Girls’ College.
These colleges have separate campuses, with education cadre officers serving as teachers.
Asked whether the new university will run on separate campuses, Prof Faiz said: “We are considering how to manage the university's operations, administrative structure, and teachers.”
In the wake of a student movement, the authorities decided to separate these seven colleges from Dhaka University on Jan 27.
They have announced students will no longer be admitted to these colleges under Dhaka University starting from the 2024-25 academic year.
The government is planning to transform the seven colleges into separate universities.
A committee headed by the UGC chairman is working on the seven colleges’ institutional structure.
Regarding the committee’s discussion with the chief advisor, Prof Faiz said: “The chief advisor was concerned about the seven colleges separating from Dhaka University.
“In the presence of the education advisor, discussions were held there on the formation of this university.”
