Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed has expressed his deep concern over an incident where eggs were thrown at a High Court judge over accusations that he made disrespectful comments about former president Ziaur Rahman, founder of the BNP.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court said in a press statement that the chief justice expresses his deep concern about the unprecedented and untoward incident that occurred on Nov 27 at the Supreme Court premises and also other untoward situations at the other courts across the country recently.

The Bangladesh Supreme Court has been observing the overall situation to ensure the courts in the country can provide justice to the people without interruption. The top court assured that the entire judiciary continued to work to uphold justice despite obstacles and unwanted situations, the statement said.

It also said the chief justice had already taken the necessary action to prevent such incidents being repeated in the courts. In addition, he gave directives to all courts and tribunals in the country to continue regular activities for the best interests of the country.

The egg-throwing incident occurred on Wednesday as a bench led by Justice Md Ashraful Kamal was hearing a case.

A group of lawyers accused the judge of making "negative comments about the late president Ziaur Rahman," saying the judge had "no right to his position," and, at one point, hurled eggs to him.

BNP leader Mahbubur Rahman Khan told bdnews24.com that Justice Ashraful announced the verdict in a case a few days ago. Although Ziaur was not part of the case context, the judge mentioned his name and "made some indecent remarks."

"The lawyers were disgruntled about the matter for the last few days," the BNP leader said.

After the eggs were hurled, Justice Ashraful and Justice Kazi Waliul Islam left the courtroom.
