The two newly elected MPs who won the by-elections in Sherpur and Bogura have taken their oaths of office as members of the 13th Parliament.

The oath-taking ceremony was held at 12pm on Sunday in the speaker’s chamber on the fourth floor of the parliament building.

Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad administered the oath to Mahmudul Hoque Rubel of the Sherpur-3 constituency and Rezaul Karim Badsha of the Bogura-6 constituency.

Afterwards, the two MPs signed the oath register as per tradition and shook hands with the speaker.

Prime Minister and Leader of the House Tarique Rahman, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Deputy Speaker Kayser Kamal, Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni, State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam, Whips Ruhul Quddus Talukdar Dulu, Mia Nuruddin Ahmed Apu, and ABM Ashraf Uddin were present at the ceremony.

The event was conducted by Parliament Secretary Golam Sarwar Bhuiyan.

In the general elections held on Feb 12, polls were held for 299 out of 300 parliamentary seats. The election in Sherpur-3 was postponed by the Election Commission due to the death of a valid candidate.

Tarique Rahman, who won both the Dhaka-17 and Bogura-6 seats, later vacated the Bogura-6 seat. By-elections in Sherpur-3 and Bogura-6 were subsequently held on Apr 9.

The Election Commission published a gazette with the names of the two winners on Saturday.

Earlier, on Feb 17, MPs elected from 297 constituencies in the parliamentary election took their oaths.

As there was no speaker and deputy speaker from the previous parliament, Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin administered the oath to the newly elected MPs.

So far, a total of 298 members of parliament have taken oath. Although vote counting in Chattogram-2 and Chattogram-4 constituencies has been completed, the results have not been announced following court directives.

The results will be declared after the disposal of cases regarding candidacy.
