Dhaka, Mar 5 (BDNEWS) – Dhaka University authorities have been violating for over a decade the terms and conditions of the Scholarship Fund established after the name of martyred freedom fighter Shafi Imam Rumi.
Students are not given their due honour as per the agreement signed with the university authorities during the establishment of the fund.
Shaheed Janani Jahanara Imam established the "Shaheed Shafi Imam Rumi Memorial Scholarship Fund" in 1991 for the students of the faculty of Social Science.
It was mentioned in the agreement signed on December 7, 1991 that the student obtaining highest marks in the BSS examinations in Social Science Faculty would get Tk 1,000 each month from the Fund during his study in MSS.
The agreement further mentions: Social Science Faculty is assigned to organise a simple ceremony every year where the scholarship would be announced. According to the agreement, there will be a discussion on the high aims of the Liberation War in the function and the scholarship holder would be gifted a piece of book "Ekattarer Dinguli" written by Mrs Jahanara Imam.
Sources said the first ceremony of the Rumi Memorial Fund was held on July 26, 1994 at the auditorium of Business Studies Institute. Prof Anisuzzaman of Bangla Department presented the keynote paper about the spirit of Liberation War in the ceremony.
But no such event was held for the last one decade after the function held in 1994.
While contacted, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the university and president of the Memorial Fund Prof AFM Yusuf Haider told BDNEWS that organising the event is the responsibility of the authorities of the concerned faculty. University authorities will highly cooperate them if they take initiative to organise such event.
The university authorities, violating the condition of the agreement, decided in 1997 to pay Tk 500 to the scholarship holders instead of Tk 1000.
Sources added that result of the examinations of BSS-2002 batch was published in 2004. Their class began four months ago. But they are yet to get the scholarship money.
