Munshiganj, June 8 (bdnews24.com)—Traffic movements on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway have been disrupted at three places in Munshiganj due to blockades by locals demanding uninterrupted power supply.
An agitated mob has kept the highway blocked at Baluakandi, Bhaterchar and Anarpura of Gazaria Upazila between 11am and 12pm on Wednesday, Upazila administration and police have said.
Gazaria Upazila executive officer (UNO) Mohammad Asaduzzaman said several hundreds people took to the street at Baluakandi around 11am demanding uninterrupted power supply.
Later, the police managed to convince them to withdraw the blockade.
After a while, however, locals blocked the highway at Bhaterchar, 7km away from Baluakandi, pressing for the same demand.
The blockade was later withdrawn following negotiations with the police.
Subsequently a third blockade was posed by residents of Anarpura, 1.5km further down from Bhaterchar.
It was also withdrawn after negotiation with police.
Gazaria police chief Arju Mia said vehicular movement had resumed to normal after midday.
No untoward incident was reported so far. However, the blockade created a huge traffic gridlock on the both sides of the road resulting in immense woes for passengers under the fierce summer sun.
