Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has toured the July Memorial Museum to look through the history and imagery of the July Uprising and 16 years of misrule under the Sheikh Hasina regime.
He was accompanied by Muhammad Yunus, former chief advisor to the interim government.
The prime minister had formally inaugurated the museum at the Ganabhaban – which had previously served as the official residence for Hasina during her time as prime minister – at 9am on Thursday.
After browsing the different rooms, the premier took the stage at the discussion venue at 9:50am.
The July Memorial Museum showcases and preserves photographs of the uprising, various memorabilia, the clothing of martyrs, letters, important documents, newspaper clippings of the time, as well as audio and video recordings of the political changeover.
The scene of ousted prime minister Hasina's escape is also preserved.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Culture Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury, State Minister Ali Newaz Mahmud Khayam, and the Prime Minister's Information Advisor Zahed Ur Rahman attended the event.
The prime minister's daughter Barrister Zaima Rahman was also present.
The museum also features images depicting the enforced disappearances during the Awami League regime, records of state-run repression, attacks on its political opponents, as well as the massacres committed during the student-led mass uprising in 2024.
Images depicting the misrule of the period have been preserved in various rooms, balconies, corridors, and outside the building on the ground floor of the museum.
On Aug 5, 2024, Hasina fled the country for India in the face of the mass movement. On that day, the Ganabhaban, was extensively vandalised and looted.
Then, on Aug 8, an interim government led by Yunus was sworn in.
Later, under the interim government, the July Memorial Museum was built at the Ganabhaban to preserve the memory of the Uprising.
