A Bangladeshi migrant worker has died in a road accident in Saudi Arabia, with his family learning of the tragedy nearly 20 days after it occurred.

The dead, 24-year-old Farid Sardar, was from South Balithuba village in Chandpur’s Faridganj Upazila.

His father said Farid died in a road accident in Riyadh, the Saudi capital, on Mar 24.

However, the family remained unaware due to a breakdown in communication.

Farid had travelled to Saudi Arabia about two and a half years ago and had been working at a coffee house.

Contact with him was reportedly lost from Mar 24 onwards, and repeated efforts to reach him failed.

The family received news of his death on Wednesday afternoon through a phone call from Saudi Arabia, the father said.

“My son worked as a labourer in a coffee house. He was the youngest of two brothers and two sisters. We sent him abroad with many hopes,” he said, requesting assistance to bring his body home.

Faridganj Upazila administrator Setu Kumar Barua expressed condolences, saying arrangements would be made to repatriate the body upon the family’s request.
