Police arrest Mohammadpur muggers' gang chief 'Bhagne Billal'

Billal was arrested from Savar's Shamlapur early on Tuesday

Police have arrested Billal, also known as “Agni Billal” and “Bhagne Billal”, whom they allege to be the leader of gang of muggers in Mohammadpur.

A Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) team arrested him from Savar's Shamlapur around 1am on Tuesday, according to a press release.

Billal, 29, has been named in six criminal cases at the Mohammadpur and Adabor police stations, with seven arrest warrants issued against him.

The DMP said it conducted a raid after receiving a tip-off that Billal, a “notorious mugger” of Mohammadpur and Adabor, was staying at Savar's Shamlapur and arrested him.

Billal held people up with machetes and other sharp weapons in different parts of the city, including Mohammadpur and Adabor, and robbed them, the press statement said.
