Police have recovered the bloodied body of a rickshaw driver, believed to have been stabbed during an attempted hijacking in Chattogram's Patiya Upazila.

The victim has been identified as Md Shaheed, 34, locally known as Saudia. Originally from Sundarganj upazila in Gaibandha, Shaheed had been living in Patiya, where he drove a battery-powered rickshaw.

Police said the attack took place on Tuesday night in South Vurshi Kochiya Para.

“We've learnt that Shaheed was travelling with passengers to South Vurshi Kochiya Para when he was stabbed with a knife,” Patiya Police Station chief Md Nuruzzaman said.

Locals rescued him and rushed him to Patiya Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.

Residents of the area said Shaheed was attacked by a group of men posing as passengers. They allegedly tried to hijack his rickshaw and, when he resisted, stabbed him in the chest and back.

Hearing his screams, locals rushed to the spot, but the attackers fled. His rickshaw was later found abandoned at the scene.

“We are working to find out why Shaheed was killed. Preparations are underway to file a case over the incident,” said Nuruzzaman.
