A 7-year-old child has gone missing after falling into the Padma River when a section of the riverbank collapsed while she was watching severe erosion in Daulatpur Upazila of Kushtia.
The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon in Bhurka Para village, according to Shafiqul Islam, Station Officer of Bheramara Fire Service and Civil Defence.
The missing child, Nuria, 7, hailed from Juniadah village in Bheramara Upazila. She had come to visit her maternal grandparents' home in Bhurka Para.
Local witness Mamun Al-Faruk said Nuria had gone to see the ongoing erosion along the Padma River after arriving at her grandparents' house.
Suddenly, the section of the riverbank where she was standing collapsed into the river, causing her to fall into the water.
Local people immediately tried to rescue her but failed because of the strong current, and she has remained missing since the incident.
The Bheramara Fire Service was later informed, and firefighters arrived at the scene and began a rescue operation.
As of 11am on Thursday, the child had still not been found, said Station Officer Shafiqul Islam.
"After receiving the information, firefighters launched a rescue operation in the river from 5:30pm on Wednesday, but they could not locate the child," he said.
He added, "On Thursday morning, a diving team from the Khulna Fire Service joined the rescue operation."
