A Kushtia court has sentenced four people to life in prison and fined them Tk 20,000 each for murdering a man in Mirpur Upazila in late 2029.
Judge Md Enayet Kabir Sarkar of the District and Sessions Court delivered the verdict in the presence of three of the accused on Monday afternoon, said state lawyer Sirajul Islam.
The convicts are Asadul Pramanik, 44, Md Abu Taher, 47, Habil Hossain, 55, and Md Milon Hossain, 35, all hailing from the Upazila’s Miton Paschimpara village. Taher was tried in absentia, prompting the court to issue an arrest warrant for him.
If they default of the fine, they will have to serve an additional year in jail.
Plaintiff Sumi Khatun stated in the case documents that she used to live with her husband, Shahabul Islam Mandal, a resident of Kushtia Sadar Upazila, at the house of her younger sister in Miton Paschimpara village.
On Oct 20, 2019, Shahabul left home with his son, Sabbir - identified by a single name - for shopping. About two hours later, Sabbir returned home alone.
Shahabul was found dead near a primary school the next morning.
Afterwards, Sumi filed the lawsuit against unidentified suspects at Mirpur Police Station.
The chargesheet was submitted against four suspects on Dec 12, 2019.
