Police have been granted seven days to grill an alleged associate of Faisal Karim Masud, the key suspect in the attempted murder of Inqilab Moncho leader Sharif Osman bin Hadi.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasibuzzaman issued the order on Tuesday in response to the police's 10-day remand petition, according to Sub-Inspector Rukunuzzaman of the prosecution police.

The suspect, identified by a single name as Kabir, was arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Monday in Narayanganj's Fatullah.

Police have already secured five-day remand orders for three others linked to the case -- Faisal's wife Saheda Parvin Samia, his brother-in-law Wahid Ahmed Shipu and his girlfriend Maria Akhtar Lima.

A separate three-day remand was earlier granted for Abdul Hannan, the owner of the motorcycle allegedly used in the attack.

The attempted murder case was filed on Sunday at Paltan Police Station with the consent of Hadi’s family, police said.

Hadi, who rose to prominence during the July Uprising and a movement demanding a ban on the Awami League, had announced plans to contest in the parliamentary elections as an independent candidate from the Dhaka-8 constituency.

He was shot on Dec 12 while travelling by battery-powered rickshaw at Dhaka’s Bijoynagar. Police say an assailant riding pillion on a motorcycle opened fire, striking him in the head.

The critically injured Hadi was first taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors carried out emergency surgery, before being transferred to Evercare Hospital.

On Monday, he was airlifted to Singapore for advanced medical treatment.
