A member of police’s Special Branch (SB) has been beaten to death in the Aminbazar area of Dhaka’s Savar.

Several people attacked 58-year-old Sub-Inspector Altaf Hossain around 8pm on Saturday in Aminbazar’s Borodeshi.

His younger son, 26-year-old Ariful Islam, was also critically injured in the incident.

Md Saiful Alam, chief of Savar Model Police Station, said that law enforcers are at the scene. More details would be released at a later time.

Citing witnesses, police said Altaf and Arif were set upon by 10-15 people over the parking of a car in front of a T-shirt factory in the Borodeshi Madina Housing Area.

They were taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital, where a doctor said Altaf had been brought in dead.

Dhaka District Superintendent of Police Shameema Parvin said the police sub-inspector was attacked near his own home over a “trivial matter” over the parking of a car.

Law enforcers are working to arrest those involved, she said.

Altaf and his son had gone to the scene in order to calm the argument between two sides over the parking of the car, Shameema said.

Altaf was assigned to Dhaka’s Malibagh. He hailed from Sadhupara village in Sirajganj’s Enayetpur. He lived with his family in the Borodeshi Madina City area in Aminbazar.

SB Savar Zone Assistant Sub-Inspector Masud Rana said Savar had a home in the Aminbazar area and inquiries are being made as to the motive for his killing.
