Journalist Anis Alamgir has been sent to jail after interrogation concluded in an Anti-Terrorism Act case filed with Uttara West Police Station in Dhaka.
The order was issued on Saturday by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Hasan Shahadat, confirmed Prosecution Sub-Inspector Shamim Hossain.
After a five-day remand, investigation officer Inspector Kazi Shahnewaz of the Detective Branch of police produced Alamgir before the court and sought his detention in jail.
The petition says Anis was interrogated in police custody, during which “crucial information relevant to the case was obtained”.
It added that the information is currently being verified. If it is found to be accurate, it may be necessary to place him on remand.
In view of this, the investigating officer requested that he be kept in prison.
The defendant’s lawyer Nazneen Nahar and several other lawyers applied for a division for him in prison.
After the hearing, the court ordered that action be taken per the prison rules.
Anis has worked in different media outlets, including the daily Ajker Kagoj.
He was recently in the news for his statements on different issues, including contemporary politics on television talk shows.
His recent posts on Facebook have also sparked widespread discussions and criticisms.
A team of police took him to the Detective Branch (DB) office after 8pm on Dec 14, for “questioning”.
The same day at midnight, a man named Arian Ahmed, identified as a member of an organisation called the “July Revolutionary Alliance”, filed a case against Alamgir and three others, accusing them of “conspiring to destabilise the state and inciting a banned organisation”.
The next day, the court granted police five days to quiz him.
The three others accused in the case are actress Meher Afroz Shaon, fashion model Maria Kispotta, and television host Imtu Ratish.
The complaint claims the accused have been directly and indirectly involved in conspiracies aimed at destabilising the state.
The complainant further alleged that since Aug 5 last year, the suspects have campaigned on social media and appeared on television talk shows to revive a banned organisation and rehabilitate the Awami League.
“These statements and online activities are inciting activists of banned organisations, including the Chhatra League and Jubo League, leading to anti-state conspiracies, violence and destruction of infrastructure,” the complaint said.
