The UK unit of the BNP attacked the high commission on Wednesday, just ahead of a verdict on party chairperson Khaleda Zia in a corruption case.
Some 100 party supporters carrying banners and placards gathered at the high commission premises.
The UK chapter’s President MA Malique later admitted some protesters entered the high commission and vandalised the photos of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Police arrested one person on the scene, Ali said at a media briefing on Thursday. He briefed the media on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s official tour of Italy and the Vatican City due to start on Feb 12.
The minister read out a statement condemning the attack.
A group of protesters, in the name of submitting a memorandum, forced their way into the high commission and attacked the mission officials and vandalised its property, the Bangladesh High Commission in London said in a statement.
“The Bangladesh High Commission in London represents Bangladesh. So vandalising the mission’s property means damaging the state property and attacking the mission means attacking Bangladesh.”
Such violent and unruly acts have tainted Bangladesh’s image abroad, according to the statement.
The commission claims that the protesters are spreading fake photos on the social media to mislead people, Ali said.
The Denmark chapter of the Awami League also has condemned the attack.
