The court has granted bail to Abdul Hannan, a former owner of the motorcycle initially linked by the RAB to the fatal attack on Inqilab Moncho Convenor Shari Osman bin Hadi.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasan Shahadat issued the order following a hearing on Sunday.

Prosecution Sub-Inspector Masum Mia said Hannan’s lawyer submitted the bail application, which the court approved.

On Dec 12, Hadi was attacked near the Bijoynagar Water Tank while travelling in a rickshaw. Two assailants on a motorcycle fired at him at close range and fled.

The bike, registered as Dhaka Metro La-54-6375, had previously belonged to Hannan. He was arrested on Dec 13 from Chand Udyan in Mohammadpur by the RAB and handed over to Paltan Police on Dec 14. Hannan was placed on a three-day remand under Section 54 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

During remand, Hannan told the court he had sold the bike to a showroom and could not change ownership due to illness. Records showed two vehicles registered in his name: a Suzuki Gixxer and a Yamaha. After remand, he was sent to jail on Dec 17.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said CCTV analysis revealed that a Honda Hornet, helmet and fake number plate were recovered on Dec 14 from Bonolata Residential Area, Agargaon, by the Counter Terrorism Unit. The Hornet’s real registration is Dhaka Metro La-54-6574, while a fake plate L-54-6376 was used during the shooting. Hannan’s Suzuki Gixxer bears registration L-54-6375.

Hadi was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition and later transferred to Evercare Hospital, where he was admitted to the ICU.

On Dec 15, he was flown to Singapore for advanced treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday. His funeral was held at the South Plaza of parliament, and he was buried at the Nazrul Islam mausoleum.

A case was filed on Dec 14 by Abdullah Al Jaber, member secretary of Inqilab Moncho, naming Faisal Karim Masud and unidentified individuals as suspects.

Arrested in connection are Faisal’s father Humayun Kabir, mother Hasi Begum, wife Saheda Parvin Samia, girlfriend Maria Akter Lima, brother-in-law Wahid Ahmed Sipu, car trader Mufti Nuruzzaman Nomani alias Uzzal, Faisal’s associate Kabir, Sibyoun Diu and Sanjay Chisim. Humayun and Hasi have confessed in court. After remand, Nomani was sent to jail; the others remain on remand.
