A mother and daughter living in a remote area of Charelahi Union in Noakhali’s Companiganj have allegedly been gang-raped.

The incident occurred on Oct 20, a complaint to the police says. Companiganj police took the matter under consideration after the allegations were filed verbally at the local police camp on Saturday evening. Afterwards, two local men – Hasan, 36, and Harun, 32 – were arrested.

The woman lives with her 17-year-old daughter and brother-in-law most of the time as her husband, a covered van driver, is often away for work. There are few other houses around their residence.

She alleges that six men from the union came to her house at 11pm on Sunday. They entered the house, gagged and bound her brother-in-law and then dragged her and her daughter outside.

She said three of the men then took her to the pond near the house while the other three took her daughter to the kitchen next to their house. They then tortured the two of them until 3am, she said.

The perpetrators looted money and other valuables from the home after the attack and threatened them to keep them quiet, she said. The following day, the woman says she went to local community leaders to demand justice.

She went to the Char Balua Police Camp on Saturday night to file a verbal complaint after the local leaders did not act.

After the allegations were reported, a raid was conducted and two people were detained, said Gazi Muhammad Fouzul Azim, chief of Companiganj Police Station, on Sunday morning. The plaintiff filed a case against the six attackers on Saturday night, he said.

The woman and her daughter have been sent to Noakhali General Hospital for medical tests.
