A man has been killed in a crude bomb explosion in Zajira Upazila of Shariatpur.

Police believe the man died while making a crude bomb when it exploded early Thursday in the Mulai Beparikandi area of Bilaspur Union.

The victim has been identified as Sohan Bepari, 32, son of Delwar Bepari of the nearby Satgariya Kandi area, according to Zajira Police Station chief Saleh Ahmed.

Police and local residents said people in the area were awakened by a loud sound in the early morning. Later, locals found Sohan’s body lying in a garlic field and informed the police.

After the incident was reported, police went to the spot and recovered the body.

Saleh said signs of a crude bomb explosion were found on the body.

“It is believed that he died in the explosion while making the crude bomb,” he said, adding that legal action would be taken in connection with the incident.

Police and locals said the incident could be linked to the long-running dispute between the current Bilaspur Union Chairman Kuddus Bepari and Swechchhasebak League leader Jalil Madbar. They often engage in clashes using locally made weapons and crude bombs.

The latest explosion occurred at the newly built house of Sagar Bepari, a cousin of Kuddus. Sohan died on the spot. His wrist and part of the house’s roof were blown off. Several others were also injured. The accomplices fled, leaving Soahn’s body in a nearby onion field.

Shilpi Begum, Sagar’s wife, said her husband is a rickshaw van puller.

“We had built the house with help from people. We did not live there for a day,” she said.

She said she was completely unaware of someone living in her house at night.

“The house was never locked because we had nothing in there,” she said.

Sajeda Begum, a local resident, alleged that the area is known to be somewhere where crude bombs are made.

“For a year locals lived in peace after some arrests were made. But tension returned to the locality recently with clashes taking place again,” she said.

Rabeya Khatun came out of her house immediately after hearing the explosion. She first thought the sound to be from an electric transmitter explosion.

“I saw smoke and some people running away. I saw a body being dragged to the nearby crop field,” she said.

Zajira Police chief Saleh Ahmed said Sagar’s house was blown away.

Police also recovered a huge amount of raw materials used for making crude bombs.
