The Appellate Division has upheld the bail granted by the High Court to former MP Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Suman in a case over the attempt to murder a Jubo Dal leader in Mirpur during the July Uprising.
A four-judge appellate bench led by Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam gave the order on Monday.
However, Suman’s lawyer said he will not be released right away as there are more cases pending against him.
Lawyer Md Liton Ahmed represented Suman at the bail hearing.
Liton told bdnews24.com that the High Court granted bail to Barrister Suman in the case filed at Mirpur Model Police Station. When the state approached the Appellate Division's chamber court seeking a stay on the High Court's bail order, the case was sent to the regular bench of the Appellate Division.
“The Appellate Division did not interfere with the High Court order, meaning the High Court’s bail order remains in effect. At the same time, the state’s application was disposed of,” he said.
The lawyer, however, said Suman will remain in jail for now as there are still six more cases against him.
The case documents allege that, on Jul 19, 2024, during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, cadres of the Awami League and its affiliated organizations carried out a reckless attack with machetes, pistols, and makeshift weapons on a peaceful gathering of students at the Mirpur-10 roundabout.
At that time, Hridoy Mia, an assistant cook at the Bangaliana Bhoj Hotel in Mirpur, was injured by the bullets fired by the accused. He is the senior vice-president of the Hatiain Union Jubo Dal in Ward No. 10 of Habiganj’s Madhabpur Upazila.
Hridoy’s right kneecap was pierced in two in the bullets. He was taken to National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation with bullet wounds and sent home after receiving 13 stitches.
Later, when his condition worsened, he was taken to the hospital again on Aug 3 and the bullet was removed from his leg.
After the fall of the Awami League government, Hridoy Mia filed an attempt to murder case at Mirpur Model Police Station on Sept 23 of that year, in which Suman was named as the third suspect.
Suman was arrested from Mirpur-6 of the capital at 1:30am on Oct 21, 2024.
In addition to this Mirpur case, Suman was also named as a suspect in two separate murder cases filed at Khilgaon and Adabor police stations in the capital on May 21 last year and in a case filed on Jul 16, 2024, regarding an attack on students at the Shayestaganj Notun Bridge roundabout in Habiganj during the anti-discrimination movement.
