Police have arrested a 19-year-old woman in Noakhali’s Begumganj over allegations that she killed her 14-day-old baby.

The incident occurred around 10pm on Monday at Bazar Bari near Majumdarhat in Ward No. 4 of Mirwarishpur Union, Begumganj Police Station chief Md Shamsuzzaman said.

Police say the woman placed the baby in a drum used to collect rainwater.

Shamsuzzaman said the mother told police that the baby had been crying excessively and disrupting her sleep.

The woman has been identified as Fatema Begum, wife of Saurav Hossain. She is originally from Narottampur Union.

Local residents said Fatema and Saurav married in November 2025 after a relationship, with their families later arranging the wedding ceremony. They said the couple had experienced marital disputes since then.

Shamsuzzaman said the baby had been missing since Monday evening, prompting family members to question Fatema.

She initially claimed that someone had struck her on the head from behind and taken the baby away, according to the police officer. She later claimed that a jinn had taken the child.

Police said her differing accounts raised suspicions among family members, who began searching for the baby.

The child was found around 10pm in a plastic drum used to store rainwater inside the house, Shamsuzzaman said.

He said Fatema later admitted to killing the baby, telling police that the child had been crying excessively and disrupting her sleep.

The baby’s father subsequently filed a murder case against Fatema, and police formally arrested her in connection with the case.

The child’s body was sent to the 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital for a post-mortem examination, Shamsuzzaman added.
