He passed away while being treated at the Suhrawardy Hospital in Dhaka at 9pm on Monday, according to a Parliament Secretariat media release.

A noted child physician, Akbar was re-elected president of the Magura district unit of the party just two days ago.

Born in Magura in 1944, he became the director of the Dhaka Shishu (Children) Hospital in 1978.

He also served as a professor at the Bangladesh Institute of Child Health.

He had been elected MP for the first time in 1996, and re-elected in 2001.

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and her deputy Fazle Rabbi Miah expressed sorrow over the MP’s death.

Chaudhury in a statement said the country had lost a social worker, prominent physician, veteran politician and a frank person.

“It’s an irreparable loss,” she said.

His Namaj-e-Janaza will be held at the South Plaza of Parliament building on Tuesday afternoon.
