Arfin Rumey given bail

A Dhaka Court has granted bail to singer Arfin Rumey in a case of wife abuse for dowry.

Metropolitan Magistrate Anwar Sadat granted bail to the singer and his brother Yasin Rony on Sunday after Rumey’s first wife Lamia Akhter told the court that she had no objection to her husband being given bail.

Lamia Akhter had filed the case on Friday night, prompting the police to arrest Rumey and his brother. They were produced before the court on Saturday and sent to jail.

Rumey’s mother is also an accused in the case.

The detail of the case filed with the Mohammadpur police said Rumey had been demanding Tk 2 million as dowry ever since his marriage with Lamia. It says the three accused tied her up and tortured her for money on Friday.

Arfin Rumey, who gained popularity quite quickly, soon faced massive criticism for having two wives. He has a son with Lamia, his first wife.

Lamia was seen limping in the court on Saturday. Rumey’s second wife, Qamrunnesa, was seen outside the court along with some of members of her family.

Rumey got the 'Uro CJFB Performance Award' for his album Esho Na in 2009 and the 'Binodon-Bichitra best composer award' in 2010.
