He will replace James Dauris, a media statement by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) on Thursday said.

Choudhury will take up his appointment in August this year.

“I am thrilled,” he was quoted as saying in the release.

Born in Sylhet region, Choudhury went to Britain as a child.

He has a BSc in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from Salford University and an MBA from Durham University.

He was recruited from outside the Foreign Office.

Choudhury joined the FCO in 2003, having served in the private sector, the Royal Air Force, the Ministry of Defence and the Cabinet Office as Director.

His big break came in 2004, when he was appointed the British High Commissioner to Bangladesh.

He was the first Briton from an ethnic minority background to hold a senior diplomatic post.

He served in Dhaka for four years.

In May 2004, the British diplomat survived a bomb attack while visiting the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal in Sylhet when the BNP-Jamaat-e-Islami combine was in power.

It was not clear whether the attack was an assassination attempt.

Choudhury returned to the FCO in 2008 as Director International Institutions responsible for multilateral policy.

He has been presented the Institute of Government Award for ‘Inspiration in Government’ for his work on diplomatic excellence.

“Peru is a rising country,” he said after his appointment, adding there was a huge opportunity to further bolster bilateral ties.

“I am looking forward to working with our excellent team in Lima on our ambition for closer ties between the UK and Peru,” he said.
