A passenger bus parked beside the road in Barguna’s Amtali Upazila has been set ablaze.

The Fire Service and Civil Defence personnel later brought the fire under control as police arrested five people over the incident.

Amtali Police Station OC Dewan Jaglul Hasan said that a “Swarna Paribahan” was set on fire at the Badhghat intersection in the Upazila around 12am on Friday.

As there was no one inside the bus, no casualties were reported. However, about 70 to 80 percent of the bus was burnt, said Md Abu Hanif, warehouse inspector of Amtali Fire Service Station.

He said, "The Swarna Paribahan bus was parked beside the road. The assailants suddenly set fire to the bus in the middle of the night."

"The fire spread throughout the bus instantly. The Fire Service members arrived at the scene and brought the fire under control."

OC Jaglul said that five people were arrested from Amtali during a night raid in connection with the bus arson and a case is being filed against the arrestees.

The detainees are Amtoli Upazila Chhatra League Vice-President Ataur Rahman Russell, its Joint Convener Parvez Khan, Amtoli Municipality Jubo League member Tanmoy Gazi - accused in 11 drug and theft cases, former municipal Chhatra League member Kawsar Ahmed Rony, and former Chhatra League activist Kawsar Ahmed Rony.

Barguna Police Superintendent Mohammad Al Mamun Sikder said that the police are on alert to avoid any unrest and untoward incidents. Several police teams are patrolling the area.
