A Jamaat-e-Islami activist has been run over and killed by a bus while attempting to clear up traffic congestion blocking a convoy carrying the party’s chief.

The incident occurred on the Cumilla-Noakhali regional highway in the Syedpur area of Cumilla’s Lalmai Upazila, according to Md Shah Alam, chief of Lalmai Police Sttaion.

The deceased, 53-year-old Jashim Uddin, hailed from Syedpur’s Paschim Para area in the Upazila. He leaves behind a wife and three sons.

Syedpur village resident Maruf Siraji, who witnessed the incident, said: “Four vehicles in the Jamaat-e-ameer’s convoy were headed to Lakshmipur when they got stuck in traffic in Bagmara’s Uttarbazar area. Jamaat activists then attempted to clear up the traffic. Suddenly, a speeding Dhaka-bound Tisha Paribahan bus rammed into Jamaat activist Jashim Uddin, who was working on the traffic, and crushed his head. He bled out and died on the spot.”

Maulana Imam Hossain, secretary of the Lalmai Upazila Jamaat unit, said: “The Jamaat-e-ameer held a public meeting at a sand field in Bagmara’s Uttar Bazar area on the way to Lakshmipur. His convoy got stuck in traffic just before his arrival.”

“I was among about 15-20 activists who tried to clear up the congestion. Jamaat activist Jashim Uddin was run over and killed by a bus after we left for the public meeting with the Jamaat-e-ameer.”

Lalmai police official Alam said, “An individual named Jashim Uddin was run over and killed by a bus in Bagmara’s Uttarbazar. We went to the deceased’s house when the incident was reported. The body is at the house.”
