Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has directed police to take firm action against supporters of the previous “fascist” government if they try to destabilise the country.
He gave the instruction at a police medal ceremony on Saturday, calling on officers to act independently and in accordance with the law.
Referring to supporters of the previous Awami League government, Salahuddin said: “If they try to destabilise the country, you will suppress them with a firm hand. You will perform your duties independently and in accordance with the law.”
He also urged police personnel at all levels to carry out their responsibilities properly and professionally.
“I want to send one message to everyone, from the grassroots level to the inspector general of police. For the needs of society, for the needs of the state, for maintaining order and for fulfilling public expectations, we will be compelled to be strict,” he said.
Salahuddin alleged that the police force, like other state institutions, had been misused by what he described as the “fallen fascist regime” and turned against the people.
“Some people are secretly assisting the fascist forces by providing intelligence. We have information and reports about this,” he said.
He said the government was giving such people an opportunity to correct themselves.
“We are giving you a very gentle opportunity to correct yourselves. No matter what position a police officer holds, if they fail to meet expectations, the consequences will not be good,” he warned.
Emphasising the need for a service-oriented police force, Salahuddin said the public did not want officers to behave like rulers.
“People no longer want to see us as kings or monarchs. They want to see a people-friendly police force,” he said.
