Police have detained a 40-year-old man over an alleged attempt to set fire to a bus in Dhaka's Azimpur area early on Sunday.

The man, identified as Aminul Islam Shaon, was detained around 2:15am after he allegedly tried to set fire to a VIP Paribahan bus parked beneath the Metani Overbridge in Azimpur under the jurisdiction of Lalbagh Police Station.

DMP Additional Deputy Commissioner for Media and Public Relations Niaz Mehedi, citing Lalbagh police, said bus staff and local residents noticed the incident and went to the spot. A police patrol team later noticed the commotion.

Aminul was detained at the scene, Mehedi said.

An agitated crowd beat him during the detention, leaving him with injuries to his head and other parts of his body. He was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment, the police official said.

Police are taking steps to pursue legal action over the incident, Mehedi added.
