Unidentified attackers have stabbed and hacked to death Jahidul Alam Jahangir, suspended president of Mithamoin Upazila BNP, in Kishoreganj.
The attack occurred outside his home in the Upazila headquarters' Beribandh around 9pm on Wednesday.
He died around midnight from excessive bleeding, said Anand Basak, a physician at the emergency department of Shaheed Syed Nazrul Islam Medical College Hospital.
Mithamoin Police chief Monowar Hossain said local residents detained two people suspected of involvement in the killing and handed them over to police.
Police and locals said Jahangir was returning home from Mithamoin Bazar with political associate Hadis Mia when three or four attackers lying in wait ambushed him just outside his house.
The attackers reportedly stabbed and hacked him repeatedly, inflicting severe injuries. When Hadis stepped in to save him, the attackers hacked him too, leaving him injured.
Jahangir was first taken to Mithamoin Upazila Health Complex, but as his condition worsened, he was moved to Shaheed Syed Nazrul Islam Medical in the district town, where doctors declared him dead.
Abdul Awal, publicity secretary of the Upazila BNP, said: "The attackers killed Jahangir Bhai in a premeditated attack under cover of darkness.
“We demand the swift arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible for this killing."
Police officer Monowar said an operation was under way to arrest those involved in the killing.
Central BNP suspended Jahangir's primary membership and all party posts in February over allegations that he had cut down around 20 mahogany trees along the embankment.
