A teenager has allegedly been drowned by two friends while the three were bathing in a pond in Gaibandha Sadar Upazila.

The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon in the Hawaii Dighi in Uttar Harinsingha village of Ramchandrapur Union, said Sadar Police chief Abdullah Al Mamun.

Relatives of the victim allegedly attacked and vandalised the homes of the two suspects on Wednesday morning.

The victim, 15-year-old Rahat, also known as Gatu, was from Uttar Harinsingha village. The two suspects, aged 15 and 16, have been absconding since the incident.

Citing locals, police said the three teenagers went to bathe in the pond around 5pm on Tuesday. An argument broke out over a trivial issue, and at one stage the two suspects allegedly pushed Rahat underwater and tried to drown him.

Locals rescued him and took him to the Gaibandha General Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Officer Abdullah said there were no visible injury marks on Rahat’s body.

The body has been sent to the hospital morgue for a postmortem. The cause of the death will be determined after getting the report.

He also said no complaint had been filed over the alleged attack and vandalism at the suspects’ homes.
