Police have taken MP Gazi Nazrul and his first wife Maksuda Khanam to Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station for questioning after the recovery of his second wife Mariam Khatun’s body.
Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner Ibne Mizan shared the development around 10pm on Sunday.
Earlier, police recovered Mariam’s hanging body from Flat 203 on the third floor of Building 5 at NAM Bhaban, near the parliament.
Tejgaon Division Additional Deputy Commissioner Fazlul Karim said police received the report around 5:30pm, while the death was estimated to have occurred between 3pm and 3:30pm.
The death follows a controversy involving Nazrul and Mariam.
In July, a video showing the two in an intimate moment at a hotel in Dhaka’s Moghbazar circulated on Facebook. Jamaat-e-Islami leaders initially claimed the video was AI-generated.
Nazrul later acknowledged on Facebook that the woman in the video was his second wife.
He said his driver and Mariam’s maternal uncle, Obaidullah, left the office before Zuhr prayers and returned with five to seven unidentified people, who allegedly held them hostage and extorted Tk 100,000.
The MP further alleged that the group later detained his rented vehicle and demanded more in installments, along with issuing threats.
Nazrul Islam was expelled from the party following the controversy over the video.
