The byelection for the Sherpur-3 constituency, which was suspended during the 13th general election, will be held on Thursday. At least 16 platoons of BGB personnel have been deployed to ensure that the election is free, fair and peaceful.
BGB members are deployed to maintain overall law and order in this constituency comprising the Sreebardi and Jhinaigati Upazilas, including conducting patrols for five days before the election, on the day of the election, and for two days after the election, said Lt Col Md Nurul Azim Bayezid, commander of the 39th BGB of the Mymensingh Battalion.
In a statement issued on Sunday, he said that as per the instructions of the Bangladesh Election Commission, BGB members will be deployed as mobile and static forces during the elections.
Under the supervision of the Mymensingh Sector of BGB and under the management of the Mymensingh Battalion (39 BGB), 16 platoons of BGB members have set up four base camps in Sreebardi and Jhinaigati Upazilas in Sherpur and began to perform their election duties.
The press release further said that since the Sherpur-3 constituency is adjacent to the border, the presence of BGB has been strengthened to maintain law and order. In addition, BGB members on duty at the border are providing necessary assistance to the constituency.
Lt Col Bayezid said, "BGB always assists the civil administration to maintain the internal law and order situation of the country. As part of this, BGB members will perform their duties in coordination with other law and order forces in this election as well."
The BGB believes that with the combined efforts of everyone, voters in the Sherpur-3 constituency will be able to exercise their voting rights without any hindrance and the election will be conducted in a free, fair, impartial and peaceful manner.
The election for the Sherpur-3 constituency was postponed due to the death of Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Nuruzzaman Badal ahead of the 13th general election on Feb 12. The election for this constituency will be held on Thursday, Apr 9, as per the schedule.
A total of four legitimate candidates, including BNP and Jamaat candidates, are contesting.
They are BNP candidate Md Mahmudul Haque Rubel, Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Md Masudur Rahman Masud, Islami Andolan Bangladesh candidate Abu Taleb Md Saifuddin, and BaSad (Marxist) candidate Md Mizanur Rahman.
