A youth, who was taking part in the Ashura Tazia procession in Old Dhaka's Sutrapur, has been hacked to death after reportedly being chased out by a group of suspects.

The alleged murder took place under an under-construction building on BK Das Road after 5pm on Friday.

Police, however, could not immediately confirm the identity of the victim and the attackers.

Sutrapur Police chief Matiur Rahman told bdnews24.com, "The youth was with the Tazia procession. A group of people chased him away.

"Later, they hacked him randomly under the under-construction building and injured him seriously. He died on the way to the hospital."

Contrary to Officer Matiur’s statement, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Lalbagh Division’s Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman said the Tazia procession had no connection with the murder.

But he admitted that the young man was hacked to death under the building.

An investigation is under way to uncover the motive behind the murder while police are working to arrest the attackers.
