A man on his way home after learning of his father’s death has been crushed under the wheels of a truck, dying on the spot.
The accident occurred around 9:30pm on Wednesday in front of the Jagrani Chakra Foundation in Swastipur in Alampur Union on the Kushtia-Jhenaidah highway, said Md Mahidul Islam, sub-inspector of the Chowrhas Highway Police.
The deceased, 45-year-old Nur Alam Ziku, was an employee of a private organisation. His body was handed over to relatives around 11:30am on Thursday after a postmortem.
Highway police said Ziku’s father, Jasim Uddin, died on Wednesday afternoon. After receiving the news, Ziku left his workplace in Magura for home on a motorcycle with his brother-in-law.
On the way, Ziku fell off the motorcycle as it was trying to overtake a sand-laden truck on a pothole-ridden road.
The motorcycle was crushed under the wheels of another truck that was behind them. Ziku died at the scene. Highway police later recovered his body and sent it to the morgue at Kushtia General Hospital.
SI Mahidul said, “When the incident occurred, the Kushtia-Jhenaidah highway was dark. As a result, it was not possible to identify which of the numerous vehicles travelling along the road had run him over.”
However, he said police are trying to identify the truck by collecting footage from CCTV cameras in the surrounding area.
