The chairman and two commissioners from the Anti-Corruption Commission have resigned from their posts in the midst of widespread reshuffling in the administration after the government changeover.
Chairman Mohammad Moinuddin Abdullah, Commissioner Asia Khatoon, and Commissioner Jahurul Haque cited ‘personal reasons’ in the resignation letters they submitted on Tuesday.
When contacted on the matter, Abdullah said: “I submitted my resignation a short while ago. I sent in my letter of resignation.”
Asked about the reason for his resignation, he said: “I don’t know. I will speak to you later.”
He cut the call immediately afterwards and left the ACC offices around 2:10pm.
According to the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, a commissioner can resign by submitting a one-month’s notice to the president. It is not yet clear whether the Moinuddin Commission has done so.
Moinuddin was a senior secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture. He was appointed as ACC chairman by the president on Mar 3, 2021.
Jahurul is a former district judge, while Asia is a former government secretary.
ACC commissioners are usually appointed for five-year terms. Under the changing circumstances, the three have resigned one-and-a-half years before their tenures end.
The ACC chairman enjoys the status and benefits of an Appellate Division justice in the Supreme Court, while a commissioner is equivalent to a High Court justice.
On Aug 5, the Awami League administration fell in the face of a student-led mass movement. Since then there have been many changes at the top levels of administrative and state institutions.
Senior officials of Bangladesh Bank, the Election Commission, the University Grants Commission, the Public Service Commission and other institutions have been obliged to step aside from their posts.
The Anti-discrimination Student Movement had demanded the resignation of the ACC chairman and commissioners in August.
The ACC chairman, commissioners, and officials were to sit for dialogue with the ACC reform commission on Tuesday. Their resignations have been submitted before the meeting could take place.
