A group of protesters has set fire to the residence of former Chattogram City Corporation mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury during demonstrations in the city over the death of Inqilab Moncho Convenor Sharif Osman bin Hadi.
The arson attack occurred 11:15pm on Thursday in the Sholoshahar area, where the house stands on Mayor Goli in Chashma Hill.
Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury Nowfel, the eldest son of the late mayor and the former education minister, used to live in there.
This is the second major attack on the home of the late Chittagong legend whose son served as education minister in the 2024 Hasina Cabinet since August last year.
Nowfel serves as the leading spokesperson for the former Awami League government in the international media.
His house has come under repeated attacks since the fall of the Awami League government in the face of a student-led mass uprising on Aug 5.
Nowfel serves as the leading spokesperson for the former Awami League government in the international media.
Witnesses said protesters first gathered at Sholoshahar Gate No. 2, then a group moved to the Chashma Hill home, vandalised it and set fire to a motorcycle parked outside.
The Chattogram Divisional Fire Service control room said a fire tender from Bayezid station was dispatched after receiving reports of the blaze.
The vehicle, however, could not reach the spot immediately due to ongoing protests in the area.
Protesters began assembling at the Sholoshahar Gate No. 2 intersection from around 10:30pm.
One group later marched towards the Indian Assistant High Commission office in Khulshi, while another remained near the Mayor Goli to continue demonstrations.
