At least 20 people have suffered injuries in repeated clashes between the Jamaat-e-Islami and BNP activists in Bhola’s Charfesson Upazila.
The incident occurred at Chawkbazar in Zinnagor Union on Monday, according to Charfesson Police chief (OC) Jahangir Badshah.
The clash escalated further when the injured were brought to the Upazila Health Complex, where members from both parties again confronted each other on the hospital grounds.
Police eventually arrived and brought the situation under control.
Jamaat leaders said they were sitting in a medicine shop run by one of their activists named Jamal, identified by a single name, in Chawkbazar after a public outreach drive.
At that time, three BNP activists allegedly approached, verbally abused Jamal, and ordered him not to participate in the campaign. When he asked for the reason, Jamal was assaulted.
He was severely injured with blows to his chest and back. Even when an ambulance was called to take him to the hospital, BNP activists allegedly blocked the vehicle.
Jamaat activists claim that as police and the party workers were taking him to the hospital, BNP activists again attacked the ambulance and the accompanying members at Chawkbazar.
Khairul Islam Sohel, former general secretary of the Charfesson municipal BNP unit, however, denied the allegations of attack, saying: "Jamaat mistreated our activists during their canvassing. Many of our workers have been injured in the attack."
Meanwhile, Navy personnel have been deployed outside the Charfesson Upazila Health Complex to prevent any untoward incident.
OC Jahangir said, "Neither side has filed a complaint yet. Legal action in this regard is under way."
