The interim government has opened a special lounge at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport called the ‘Probashi Lounge’ for Bangladesh’s expatriate workers.
Muhammad Yunus, chief advisor of the interim government, inaugurated the lounge on Monday morning.
“Our migrant workers are also the builders of our country,” he said. “They played a major role in the mass uprising in July and August. We will always be grateful to them.”
“We believe this lounge will ease their journeys.”
A press release from the Chief Advisor’s Office says that this is the first such expatriate lounge at the Dhaka airport. Migrant workers can use the area to rest and snacks will be provided there at a subsidised cost.
On Oct 5, Expatriate Welfare Advisor Asif Nazrul had announced the setting up of the lounge within the next two weeks.
He had said that the lounge would ease the suffering of expatriate workers travelling abroad.
“One person will go with them as an escort. They will be accompanied by people at every stage until they board the plane. It is not a kindness to them, it is our responsibility,” Nazrul said.
He also attended the inauguration ceremony on Monday. In his speech, he paid his respect to the expatriate workers who sacrificed for the country and expressed his deep respect for the more than 10 million expatriate workers from the country.
The International Organization for Migration, or IOM, is sponsoring the lounge.
“The United Nations has sponsored the lounge to help Bangladeshi migrant workers,” said Fatima Nusrath Ghazzali, deputy chief of the IOM mission in Bangladesh.
“This is an initiative by the honourable chief advisor. We are delighted to support it. In addition, IOM is sponsoring around 100 volunteers to help migrants at the airport.
