Dhaka Metropolitan Police have arrested former Gaibandha-2 MP Mahabub Ara Begum Gini.
She was arrested on Tuesday night from Dhanmondi, according to Rabiul Hossain Bhuiyan, joint commissioner (north) of the Detective Branch.
“Mahabub Ara Begum Gini has been accused in a case filed at Dhaka’s Savar Police Station. She has been arrested in connection with the case,” he said.
On Aug 5, in the face of a student-led mass movement, Awami League President Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and fled to India. Since then, many Awami League ministers, state ministers, senior leaders, and influential MPs have been arrested.
Nearly 50 of the party’s top leaders are now in jail. Gini is now one of them.
She was first elected to parliament as a candidate from the Awami League in the 9th National Parliamentary Elections. She was a member of the Parliamentary Committee on the Ministry of Youth and Sports and also of the Library Committee.
The former MP also served as parliamentary whip in the 10th National Parliament.
