Rainfall may increase across Bangladesh next week as a low-pressure system is expected to form over the North Andaman Sea and adjoining areas within the next two days, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
The system has not yet formed, but meteorologist Md Omar Faruk says it could intensify into a depression and eventually develop into a cyclone.
“If the low-pressure system forms, it may intensify into a depression and could later develop into a cyclone,” Omar told bdnews24.com on Friday afternoon.
“However, its likely track is towards Odisha. Its influence may increase rainfall in Bangladesh, particularly around Sept 23, 24 and 25.”
The forecast comes after several parts of Bangladesh received heavy rain over the past few days.
Tetulia in Panchagarh recorded 118mm of rain in the 24 hours to 9am on Friday, the highest in the country during the period.
Aricha recorded 106mm, Narayanganj 93mm, Baghabari in Rajshahi 61mm and Mongla in Bagerhat 55mm. Dhaka received 11mm of rain.
Fog has also appeared in parts of the country over the past couple of days.
Omar said the phenomenon was linked to the recent spell of rain and was likely to be temporary.
“There has been rainfall in different parts of the country over the past few days. When a spell of rain ends, this kind of fog can appear,” he said.
“This temporary fog should clear within the next one or two days.”
In its Friday morning bulletin, the BMD said the monsoon was less active over Bangladesh and weak over the northern Bay of Bengal.
The monsoon trough extends through Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and central Bangladesh to Assam, with another extension reaching the northern Bay.
Light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty winds may occur at some places in Rangpur and Chattogram divisions in the 24 hours from 9am on Friday.
Rain is also possible at one or two places in Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Sylhet divisions.
Day and night temperatures are expected to remain nearly unchanged across the country.
The BMD said the tendency for rain or thundershowers could increase over the following five days.
The highest temperature recorded in the 24 hours to Friday morning was 36.5 degrees Celsius in Ramgati, Lakshmipur.
Narayanganj recorded the lowest temperature at 21.5 degrees Celsius.
