Children must not only excel in studies, sports, arts, culture and languages, but also be brought up as compassionate human beings, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said.
Speaking at a programme marking Children’s Rights Day 2026 and the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh Shishu Academy on Tuesday, he urged children to care for nature, animals and birds.
“You have many responsibilities to fulfil. It is not enough to learn your lessons. It is not enough to be good at sports. It is not enough to excel in art and culture. It is not enough to know three languages instead of two, or four instead of three.”
“But you have to be humane. You have to be compassionate towards nature and towards its animals and birds,” the prime minister said.
He said, “We firmly hope to build a humane Bangladesh. Kindness should not be limited to other people. We should be kind to nature and show compassion to everything created by it, and I firmly believe that you will be able to do so.”
Care For Trees, Animals And Birds: PM Urges To Children
The prime minister urged children to take care of the trees, animals and birds around them.
“As you grow up, try to look after the nature around you. That means the trees and plants around you—whether around your home, at your school, or in any place you like. If there is a tree that is growing slowly just like you, perhaps it is still a child like you today, help that tree grow just as you grow. Water it and take care of it so that it can grow,” he said.
Addressing the children, Tarique said, “Wherever you live, whether at home or at school, there are animals and birds around you. Try to remember that these animals and birds are also the wealth of this country, the wealth of your country, and therefore, your wealth. Try to be kind to them, show compassion towards them and help them in different ways.”
The prime minister also urged parents to make their children aware of these responsibilities.
“I earnestly request you to infuse this feeling, this sense of awareness in your children so that they become kind to nature and kind to the animals and birds created by nature,” he said.
“If we all make an effort to infuse this feeling and awareness in our children, I firmly believe that, Inshallah, one day we will be able to build a humane Bangladesh. If we are kind to nature, nature will certainly be kind to us,” he said.
