Prison authorities in Gazipur have suspended three matrons and four women guards, and formed a committee to investigate how a woman inmate broke out of Kashimpur Female’s Central Jail.

Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Prisons Md Jannatul Farhad said the disciplinary actions were taken based on preliminary findings of negligence of duty.

Apart from matron Laila Anjuman Sumi, the remaining suspended personnel are identified only by single names as matrons Merina and Rehena, and female prison guards Shaila, Sharmin, Jemi, and Asma.

A three-strong committee was formed on Friday to look into the escape, the AIG added.

Senior Jail Superintendent of Kashimpur Central Jail-2 Halima Khatun will head the panel, which has been asked to submit its report within seven working days.

The escape took place on Thursday evening, when several women inmates were assigned to carry bricks inside the jail.

One of them climbed up a ledge along a wall near the office building and scaled the boundary wall to get away.

The escapee has been identified only as Rimpa, 21.

She had been serving a three-month sentence handed down in a complaint register (CR) case filed with Dhanmondi Police Station in Dhaka, and was sent to Kashimpur jail from court on Jul 9.

Prison authorities searched the entire facility immediately after the escape came to light but found no trace of Rimpa.

A review of CCTV footage later confirmed she had fled the jail.

The AIG said an investigation was under way into how an inmate managed to escape despite “tight security”.

A case has been filed with Konabari Police Station, and police along with other law-enforcing agencies are working to arrest the escaped inmate, Jannatul added.
