Foreign Advisor Touhid Hossain says that he cannot confirm reports that former prime minister Sheikh Hasina has travelled from New Delhi to the United Arab Emirates.
In response to a question from the media on Tuesday, he said: “We have not been able to confirm her location. We have made inquiries in Delhi and the Emirates. No one has been able to provide official confirmation.”
“But we have seen the same things you have – that she has gone to Ajman [a city of the UAE]. We have tried to reconfirm it, but have not been successful in doing so.”
Awami League President Hasina resigned her premiership and fled to India on Aug 5 in the face of a student-led mass movement and public outrage.
According to media reports, she took a helicopter from the Gonobhaban to the airport, where she boarded a military plane that took her to India’s Agartala. From there, she was taken to Hindon Airport in Ghaziabad. She was accompanied by her younger sister Sheikh Rehana.
Recent media reports say that Hasina has left India and taken refuge in Ajman in the UAE. Rumours swirling on social media say that the Indian government has sent her to the UAE under pressure from the US.
Asked about the rumours, Touhd said: “I cannot say. You should ask the Americans whether they have put pressure on them.”
