The government has appointed Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury of the Supreme Court's Appellate Division as chairman of the Bangladesh Judicial Service Commission, or BJSC.
The Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs announced this in a notification on Tuesday, following President Mohammed Shahabuddin’s directive under Rule 3(2)(a) of the Bangladesh Judicial Service Commission Rules, 2007.
The appointment takes immediate effect.
Justice Zubayer was sworn in as a justice of the Appellate Division on Aug 13.
This change in the country’s apex court follows growing calls for 'reform' across public and private institutions after Sheikh Hasina's regime was toppled on Aug 5.
Following the resignation of the chief justice and five other Appellate Division justices, including Justice M Enayetur Rahim, this position became vacant.
He had been appointed as chairman of the BJSC in October 2023.
However, following his resignation, the position also became vacant.
