River Police have reported the discovery of five bodies on board a vessel anchored in the Meghna River in Chandpur. Two more victims have died at the Chandpur Sadar Hospital after three were rushed there in critical condition.
The vessel, named the MV Al Bakhera, was anchored in the Majherchar area of Haimchar Upazila, according to Syed Mushfiqur Rahman, superintendent of Chandpur River Police. Police went to the scene when the vessel was reported to the 999 emergency number on Monday afternoon.
“Over the telephone, they said the vessel had been attacked by robbers. We found five bodies. Three people have been sent to the hospital.”
“The five were asleep when they were killed by neck wounds from sharp weapons,” Mushfiqur said.
The Coast Guard and the police are conducting rescue operations at the scene.
Two of the three people rushed to the hospital in critical condition have died while the third has been transferred to Dhaka, still in critical condition, according to Mohsin Uddin, the deputy commissioner of Chandpur.
