Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed has formed eight benches in the High Court Division to resume judicial functions on a limited scale starting Monday.

The benches will begin their sessions at 10:30am, according to a Sunday notice on the Supreme Court’s website.

Among the benches, five are division benches, while three are single-judge benches.

The composition of the benches is as follows:

  • Justices Sheikh Hassan Arif and Mohammad Bazlur Rahman: Writ petitions
  • Justices Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Md Bashir Ullah: Civil cases
  • Justice Khizir Ahmed Choudhury: Company cases
  • Justices Md Iqbal Kabir and Md Riaz Uddin Khan: Writ petitions
  • Justice Md Kamrul Hossain Mollah: Civil and criminal cases
  • Justices SM Kuddus Zaman and AKM Rabiul Hassan: Criminal cases
  • Justices Md Ataur Rahman Khan and Md Ali Reza: Criminal cases
  • Justice Biswajit Debnath: Civil cases

The formation of these benches follows the resignation of Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan and other judges of the Appellate Division amid a wave of changes in top positions across state institutions due to the government transition.

On Saturday, facing student demands, Chief Justice Hassan resigned along with other Appellate Division judges.

Subsequently, Justice Refaat was appointed as chief justice.

He took oath of office at the Bangabhaban on Sunday afternoon, administered by President Mohammed Sahabuddin.
