Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has urged the United States to increase investment in Bangladesh, including through the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC).
He made the call during a meeting with US President Donald Trump’s Special Envoy Sergio Gor at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in Tejgaon on Saturday.
Deputy Press Secretary Shahadat Hossain Shadhin said they discussed expanding DFC investment cooperation, with Gor assuring the prime minister that Washington would work positively towards that goal.
“Gor also told the prime minister that US investors in Dhaka are keen to organise a US Investor Summit soon, and that he is personally working to make it happen.”
The talks also covered bilateral ties, trade and investment, regional cooperation and issues of mutual interest. Shadhin described the meeting as “very warm and cordial”.
Gor arrived in Dhaka on Thursday for a three-day visit, his first to Bangladesh since becoming the US special envoy for the region alongside his role as ambassador to India last September.
Shadhin said Gor praised Tarique’s leadership, saying stability was returning to Bangladesh under his stewardship.
“He said the US’s recent positive revision of its travel advisory for Bangladesh was an indication of this. It will send an important message to US investors that Bangladesh is now ready for investment.”
Investment Push
Tarique called for US investment in warehousing, soybeans, cotton, wheat and other agricultural sectors, saying it could help build a stronger, more competitive supply chain.
He also expressed particular interest in investment in Bangladesh’s IT sector.
Gor acknowledged the country’s significant potential in these areas and said Bangladesh could eventually become a partner in the Pax Silica initiative.
They also discussed expanding cooperation with the US Food and Drug Administration and an expected visit by a US-Bangladesh Business Council delegation next month.
Rohingya Crisis
Gor also shared his experience from a visit to Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar on Friday, praising Bangladesh for sheltering refugees and continuing humanitarian assistance.
Tarique thanked the US, noting that it contributes more than half of international aid for the Rohingya.
Gor called for a swift, sustainable and political solution to the crisis, stressing coordinated efforts by all stakeholders, including ASEAN neighbours.
