The government is going to ban the Jamaat-e-Islami, which opposed Bangladesh’s independence in the 1971 Liberation, and its student front Islami Chhatra Shibir under the Anti Terrorism Act.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan revealed the information at a press conference at the Secretariat on Wednesday, adding that a notification would be issued anytime.
He mentioned section 18 of the anti-terror law for the banning. The section states:
“Proscription and Enlistment of organizations.– (1) For the purposes of this Act, the Government, on reasonable grounds that a person or an entity is involved in terrorist activities, may, by order, enlist the person in the schedule or proscribe the entity and enlist it in the Schedule.
(2) The Government may, by order, include in or exclude any person or entity from the Schedule or amend the Schedule in any other manner.”
The home minister cited Jamaat’s “terrorism in the past, the demand to ban it by the 14-Party Alliance and the civil society, and the party’s link to violence during recent student protests for government job quota reforms” as the reasons behind the decision.
The alliance, led by the ruling Awami League, decided to ban the Jamaat in a meeting on Monday.
On Tuesday, Law Minister Anisul Huq said the banning of the Jamaat would be done through an executive order.
